Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Babak Amini has been given the best non-European film award at Grand Off - European Off Film Awards in Poland.

Amini's Angels Die in the Soil has been named the best short film in the non-European section of the competition by an international jury.

The 30-minute film depicts the story of an Iraqi-Kurdish girl who earns a living for herself and her ill father by selling the bones of Iranian soldiers martyred during the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88.

One day, she is witness to a terrorist attack against an American on her way home and decides to try and help him.

Her innocent struggles to survive and help a total stranger captivated the jury.

The young Iranian director is now in Paris to attend a Cinefondation cinema workshop, which is sponsored by the Cannes Film Festival. He hopes to produce his first fictional feature film after attending the workshop.

European Off Film Awards is one of the most important film festivals for the promotion of independent cinema in Poland and aims to portray the independent film industry in a different light.
